Revised Highway Code unveiled

The first revised Highway Code in eight years has today been unveiled by Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick. The updated Code offers the latest road safety rules and advice, as well as promoting greater courtesy and understanding among all road users, particularly those who are most vulnerable.

September registrations increase fuelled by green

  • Key September market with new '57' plate, sees volumes rise 1.3 per cent
  • Total year-to-date registrations up 2.0 per cent to 1,940,515 units
  • September diesel registrations up 6.7 per cent to 167,031 units
  • Alternatively fuelled vehicles year-to-date registrations jump 82.1 per cent

'September has traditionally been the strongest month for registrations after March - and this year it has exceeded expectations with 419,290 new cars motoring out of showrooms,' said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive. 'With climate change issues at the forefront of everyone's agenda, it is encouraging to note the rise in uptake of low-carbon vehicles. Motorists are increasingly playing their part in tackling environmental impact and SMMT's annual Sustainability Report, to be launched on 9 October, will highlight the progress the UK automotive manufacturing sector has made over the last eight years.'

Government starts biofuel agency

The Department for Transport has established a new agency to oversee the application of the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation, meeting a target of 5% biofuel use in the UK by 2010.

The Renewable Fuels Agency will be chaired by former Environment Agency chief Professor Ed Gallagher, who said: 'I am looking forward to working with the oil industry, biofuel companies, environmental groups, motorists and the general public to ensure that biofuels fulfill their potential.'
