The number of licensed vehicles with engine capacity of more than 2,000cc increased from 2.3 million in 1999 to 4.0 million in 2008, data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed.

Jaguar Land Rover names GM chief as new boss

Jaguar Land Rover, the Indian-owned British-based car manufacturer, has appointed a German as its new boss.

Three weeks after parting company with David Smith, the chief executive who had overseen the $2.3 billion sale of Jaguar Land Rover from Ford in 2008, Tata Motors. The Midlands carmakers owners today said it has hired Carl-Peter Forster to take charge.

Most recently head of the European end of General Motors including Vauxhall, Mr Forster has been appointed as chief executive of Tata Motors across all its global operations and with special responsibility for overseeing growth at its Jaguar and Land Rover brands.

Mr Forster comes in as Jaguar Land Rovers fortunes appear to be turning.

A Brazilian television channel has announced that Rubens Barrichello will be moving from Brawn GP to race with Williams next year.

TV Globo claims the veteran Brazilian driver will partner rising German star Nico Hulkenberg, who won the GP2 championship this year, at Williams. Globo also says Williams will be using Cosworth engines

Committee suggests road charging and 60mph limit

A government committee has suggested that the motorway speed limit should be reduced to 60mph to cut national carbon dioxide emissions.

A report by the Committee on Climate Change claims the speed limit reduction could reduce annual CO2 emissions by 1.4 million tonnes.
